Pangaea: What’s Behind the Name

At the center of it all is our name, Pangaea. How did this name come to be and how do we live up to its meaning every day?

We have now been sharing our insights and expertise on various technology and business-related topics through this blog since March. We thought it was time that we shared a bit about who Pangaea is – our vision, culture and values.

At the center of it all is our name, Pangaea. How did this name come to be and how do we live up to its meaning every day?

In order to delve deeper into the meaning behind the name, it is important to first understand an important aspect of our business – the consortium.

Pangaea is part of a group of companies that all work together, who provide mutual support and share resources with each other. There are 3 companies that make up this consortium: iSSiEndeavor Consulting Group and Pangaea.

Pangaea was founded in 2011 and is the most recent addition to our consortium of companies. While it is still a separate entity, it works alongside Endeavor and iSSi to collaborate on projects, business initiatives and sustainment resourcing. Pangaea’s role in the consortium is the development, marketing and sales of SAP products and accelerators. iSSi and Endeavor are service-oriented and provide a variety of SAP services.

Now that you understand a bit about what Pangaea does and which companies we work with, let’s go through the meaning of Pangaea and how that relates to our company’s values and vision.

Our Vision

There are three business drivers that are imperative to Pangaea’s success. They are referred to as the “Three Circles:” Passion, Value and World Class.

To understand how Passion, Value and World Class relates to our work, take a look at our Vision and Mission Statements:

Vision Statement

“Our success is rooted in who we are, what we do best, and the difference we make – passionate people delivering world class solutions to enrich our clients.”

Mission Statement

“To develop and deploy sophisticated, leading edge accelerators and solutions rooted in the SAP platform.”

The Meaning of Pangaea

At this point, you may be wondering, “How does this relate to the word Pangaea?” Or even, “What is Pangaea?”

Pangaea is a geological term. It’s used to describe a theoretical great continent in the Northern Hemisphere, which fragmented to produce our current continents. It’s the latest in a series of supercontinents that scientists have been able to document in recent years by ‘reading the rocks’. Pangaea was itself formed by other landmasses coming together. (source: Wikipedia)

The integration of the landmasses relates to our group of businesses coming together to form our consortium. What’s also interesting is that Pangaea was the most recent addition to our consortium, and it’s also the most recent supercontinent to exist.

In the world of geology, the term also implies a dynamic environment, since the world is ever-evolving under the influence of plate tectonics (which fragmented Pangaea over time). This is true for technology as well – there is constant growth in our industry.

Our team and its organization is another area of our business that is always evolving. This is one area that we really focus on in our business – we are always looking for ways to improve our efficiency and effectiveness as a team.

You can take a look at some of the strategies we use in “3 Powerful Structures to Organize Your Technology Team.”

There is also another way to look at the word Pangaea – and that’s its Greek origin.

If you separate the word into its two syllables “Pan” and “Gaea” you will get two different words:

Pan

Means everything or all. It is a prefix derived from Greek. It is used widely in English as a prefix (panorama, panacea, panoply, etc.) It is also used in terms implying the union of branches of a group or bringing things together.

Gaea

Gaea is also derived from the Greek language “Gaia” meaning “Earth.” Gaea or “Gaia” was also the Greek goddess of the earth.
